EXCLUSIVE: Company Meets Alesso

I’ve always been that kid in the family that listens to music!

I used to dance, play piano, sing, perform - I did everything when I was very young,  so I knew I was always going to work with music but I didn’t know exactly what. But then I heard dance music and house music…

Something happened when I heard dance music and it became like a drug to me…

I couldn’t stop thinking and listening and I just went crazy over it. So I knew when I heard that music genre that I wanted to do something with it.

I got a cd from a good friend of mine and it had some Erick Morillo and Roger Sanchez tracks in there and I was just like, ‘mind blown!’. I’d heard dance music before but it wasn’t quality like this was. This was proper dance music.

The number one rule I have when I DJ is not to stand still

I’ve been to plenty of shows before I started to DJ myself where I was thinking ‘why don’t they do it that way, I would do it this way...’. I’m the conductor for the show, the room and the whole crowd, so what you do is going to have an effect. If you stand still the crowd is going to feel uncomfortable. I just try and do the things that I would appreciate myself.

My advice to get over jet lag? Hire a dietitian…

It’s expensive, yes, but it actually helps a lot. I’m barely get jet lagged now because my dietitian helps me with using all this herbal stuff - magnesium, melatonin, it’s really good for you. I have always been a night person, but for four years, I couldn’t fall asleep until 2 or 3am because of this lifestyle. But now my diet has changed everything. Now, I wake up and I feel great.

I’m not even allowed coffee

Unless its this organic coffee from the US! It depends how far you want to go with it, my guy is crazy, but it has really helped.

When it comes to luggage, I’m so unlucky!

I flew all the way from Vegas to London to Sweden and the flight was delayed the whole way. When I finally got to Sweden I only had one day before I had to go to Belgium. Then the airline said, “oh we don’t even know where you’re bag is, its probably in London.” My life was in that luggage, but I had to go and buy all this new stuff. They did actually find and the real hero was my work colleague; she called them every minute to track it down.

I just wanted to do something completely different with the video for Cool

I wanted to do the unexpected. I had an amazing time, it was the most fun I’ve ever had shooting a video. The dance moves were all a joke, but it also has a message behind it that you shouldn’t always take yourself so seriously. Obviously I’m playing this character, but you should always embrace yourself and not try to be someone else. Because in high school you’re so insecure and worried about who you are and everybody’s thinking that. I did, and all of my friends did, and so it has that message.

I like Taylor Swifts songs. Who doesn’t? They’re catchy!

I’m not the kind of person who’s like I only like this genre or that kind of music, I love everything if I think its good. If I like the track, I like it. I’m not ashamed to say it.

I’ve been working on my album for about a year and a half

I thought I should finish it earlier but I’m on this crazy schedule where I’m constantly touring. I have to work on the plane, hotel rooms, and studios; somewhere in LA, Sweden New York… I’ve never had a couple of months off, like bands or other artists do.

Social media is the best way to connect with my fans

That’s why I love social media. You can be so connected to your fans and spread your music so easily. I just try to upload things that I think are cool or fun or that I feel make sense. Although, sometimes they don’t have to make sense!

My new campaign with Carolina Herrera 212 is dark, edgy and very passionate

I got the offer to do this with them, and it really made sense to do it. They represent sensuality, they’re stylish, very chic, and they represent all these cool things. We’ve done a collaboration with this track that’s also on my album called If It Wasn’t For You, and I’m really happy with the result.

Alesso’s debut album ‘Forever’ is set for release 25th May through Virgin EMI/ Def Jam. Preorder it here
