So what’s the film about? Beyond Clueless is a film about teen movies — the way they look, the way they think, and the way they feel.
And when did your devotion to 90s teen films begin? I grew up watching them, so I suppose my dedication began there. But it was only when I went back to rediscover them in my twenties, that I became really fascinated with what was going on beneath the surface of these movies.
And so you made a film? The last thing I wanted to do was condescend to the teen genre. While I love deconstructing and analysing these films, I also have a huge emotional attachment to them, and I wanted to get that across as well. Making a film that could double as a documentary and a teen movie itself seemed like the best way to do that.
Aren’t films really expensive to make? We had a really successful month on Kickstarter that — apart from anything else — confirmed to me that people were definitely interested in seeing a movie like this. Watch the Kickstarter film here:
And doesn’t it take a long time to make? The film is constructed entirely from existing teen movies, so there was no filming. In total, it took just over a year to make the film, from research, to writing, to a very long editing process, and finally to recording our narration with the incredible Fairuza Balk.
Did you get any other help? Hattie is one of my favourite illustrators and her amazing Mean Girls poster had been hanging in our edit suite for most of the year, so she was a dream choice to do the title design for Beyond Clueless.

What’s been the best reaction to the film? Blair Hayes, the director of Bubble Boy, has been a big supporter.
And you took it to SxSW? I still can't believe we got to show the film there. SXSW are brilliant at supporting movies that don't quite fit into obvious categories, so our film — which is partly a documentary, but partly a teen movie in its own right — felt like a great fit.
What was SxSW like? You can watch our experience in this film we made for The Guardian here:
So who should go watch it? Anyone who can't quite explain why their favourite teen movie means so much to them.
That’s us then! Beyond Clueless will be screening in the UK this summer - keep posted to www.beyondclueless.co.uk for where
