Whether you walk the whole way, just to/from the station or part of the way, then you'll understand the dilemma of the 'commuting shoe'. You can't wear your normal ankle boots/heels/sandals - not just becuase blisters are nobody's friend, but because that is NOT good news for your feet - hands up who wants shin splints?? Nope, we thought not.
So then you think "I have to make a choice. Supportive and comfortable trainers or fashion?" But the good news is, that's now not a choice you need to make, as there are SO MANY amazing trainers out there that not only make walking an actual joy, but make you look damn good at the same time. So lace 'em up, get power walking and beat those phony, shoe-shod commuters to the office or lecture. laters, suckers! Here are our faves:
Nike Roshe One Breeze £70, JD Sports
To be fair, you might buy these just to look cool even if you drive from door to door, but the technical elements to the Roshe mean they're also spot on for commuting.
The light-weight Lunarlon and EVA foam sole mean they are SUPER comfy, and we love the fact that these are so breathable that they can easilty be worn wothout socks, which does make your look more chic, even if you are power walking through a crowded high street.
THE REAL REASON YOU SHOULDN'T WORK OUT IN THE MORNING
ADIDAS ENERGY BOOST 2 WOMEN'S RUNNING SHOES, £59.99 Sportshoes.com
These trainers feel totoally different to anything we've worn before. For a start, they are OS light - and the almost olyurethane capsules that make up the sole means it's like walking on air, and they almost propell you forward - meaning that walking long distances is a doddle. They really hug your feet and they come in some amazing colous - but we'd recommed you go up by half a size for the ultimate fit.
WHICH TRAINERS ARE RIGHT FOR YOUR WORKOUT?
GEL-KAYANO 21, £145 Asics
This shoe has racked up more than 20 years of success on the road, helping runners (and super-quick walkers) stay stable and comfortable over long distances. The GEL-KAYANO hugs your feet and cushions the impact to make every step seem easy.
The main points we love about this trainer is the fact that they protect your feet from impact with GEL cushioning, making walking feel light and bouncy thanks to the lightweight structure. They also have a snug fit that prevents slipping and rubbing (be gone, blisters!). They're maybe the least sexy of the three, but they work with any outfit and other commuters will watch with envy as you stride past them wih ease.
