Where did the idea to write the script from Frances Ha come from?
After I had a made a movie called Greenberg with Noah [Baumbach], he emailed and asked me if I would be interested in collaborating on something, he wasn’t sure what, but he’d like to shoot New York City and did I have any ideas…
The film feels like a love letter to NY…
Yes, well I have lots of deep feelings of love for New York City so I think it would be very hard for me to make a movie about New York that wasn’t just a complete gushing love letter. I didn't grow up in New York, so I feel so privileged to be here.
Where's your favourite place in the city?
I have a lot of favourite places. I really really love the subway, I love writing in the subway and I get a lot of good thinking done. I find it very calming.
We really loved was the female friendship in Frances Ha. Did that come from experience?
It definitely came from experience. I had about five best friends so we were all friends together and we all lived together and so in some ways it was like a distillation of a bunch of different people. Female friends are incredibly important in my life and they’ve made my life unmeasurably better and I think I wanted to make a movie that celebrated that, that was sort of an anthem for that.
