How To Land Your Dream Job In Ibiza

Two years ago, Hattie Scanlan, 24, was working as a freelance photographer and visual merchandiser, living with her mum in Huddersfield. Bored of her job and with all of her friends settling down she booked a one way flight to Ibiza.

Working as a club promoter on the island, she quickly worked her way up to become the Ibiza PR Manager for global dance music and lifestyle brand, HedKandi.

Sound like she’s living your dream? Here’s how she did it…

What are the first steps everyone should take when looking for great work in Ibiza?

Be prepared! There’s so much competition for great positions that it’s important to do your research in advance. Before you leave, prepare a show stopping CV with a photo attached to it - something that most employers require - and tailor it to showcase all of your strengths and experiences that would suit that job role whether it be a promoter, dancer, barman or DJ. Make sure you bring out your personality as much as you can to make you stand out from the crowd.

How did you become PR Manager for Hed Kandi?

I had worked in sales and marketing for a few years, starting with field sales and moving on to running campaigns for well-known brands so I had a good grounding in some of the necessary skills.  I also photograph live events and have always admired how much hard work goes into every aspect of putting on a great show.  Whilst I was a promoter, I saw the vacancy for PR Manager and instantly thought this is an opportunity not only to work for an incredible brand but to get my foot in the door of a really influential name in the music industry that puts on some unforgettable events all around the world. I think my passion for the role really shone through in my interview and I got the job!

What’s your advice for other people looking to do the same?

Make yourself indispensable. There are so many people looking for that unforgettable opportunity to work in such an exciting environment so always make yourself stand out and showcase how and why you want that opportunity.

Remember that it’s not all fun and games, if you want to really be successful you have to put in the hard graft first.

What are your tips for networking on the island?

Ibiza welcomes so many talented, well-respected and influential people that if you want to be recognised for your talents, here is the place to do it! However, it’s important to be professional – the island isn’t big so word will get around if you don’t do your job well.

What is it really like working for Hed Kandi?

Where do I start?  Working with such a fantastic team of creative and dedicated people to host spectacular events - I couldn’t have asked for a more rewarding opportunity. There are ups and downs and I work long hours but I have never had a job where I can see all of my hard work paying off in front of my eyes.

How do you think a season abroad can benefit someone’s career in the long term?

A season abroad takes you out of your comfort zone – you have to adapt to new environments very quickly to keep up with such a fast paced industry. You really hone your communication, people and sales skills which are great for any career path!

Is there anything else people really need to know about working in Ibiza?

Look beyond the season. A lot of workers look at everything as coming to an end in September. Yes, the clubs may close but what keep the island busy are the brands and promoters that operate worldwide. Take advantage of the fact that so many fantastic promoters are together in one spot for an entire summer because there’s always opportunities and chances to gain experience once it’s over.

Like what you read? Well, HedKandi are searching for incredible people to represent them in Ibiza this summer and that could mean YOU! All you have to do is apply via the Ministry of Sound careers website with your CV, cover letter and a 20 second video clip on your social channels using the hashtag #TeamHedKandi, to demonstrate why you should be selected. Good luck!
